Copthorne Archive May 2016
We look forward to seeing you at the Copthorne Carnival
– here are some of the wonderful prizes local organisations have kindly donated for the Grand Draw, which we’re running this year:
Avensys – Panasonic large screen TV Southern Pursuits
– Aim & Terrain Adventure Package for 2 people
Olivers Wine & Coffee Shop
– £150 voucher Copthorne Golf Club – a round of golf for 4 people
Carrying on with our theme of local businesses; if you’ve ever walked past the Mill Pond and wondered about Rowfant Mill’s previous life as a working mill, here’s a little taster. This photo was shared with the Archive recently by Pam Norman, who received it from her cousin Catherine ‘Topsy’ Bassett, who lived in Australia until her recent death. Apparently the photo was taken on the day the Heasman Brothers ceased trading, and Topsy’s father Alfred Leppard, is on the left of the photo, with the two Heasman brothers in bowler hats, on the right. The photo was found in the Mill when work started on its conversion to a house, and we believe the advert must have come from a local newspaper.
We’d love to know if anyone has any more information about Rowfant Mill and Heasman Bros. ROYAL PORTRAIT

THE COPTHORNE ARCHIVE Our team of volunteers is growing, but we are still in need of a fundraiser, to search for grants and make the applications, and someone to give IT assistance.
