On Tuesdays Swiftsure organises deck nights. The activities on deck nights can range from games to classes to arts and crafts. We ensure that the cadets accomplish the tasks so that they can advance in the ranks but also there are times when the cadets need to just have fun and so we incorporate games or arts and crafts night.
NSTC Lion National Seamanship Training Centre. Lion is a sailing school based in Portsmouth. Our cadets often spend weekends at this centre, learning and building upon their sailing and powerboating skills. This year, we have currently had three weekend trips down to Lion, all of which have been very successful and have allowed the cadets a chance to progress in signing off their RYA Logbooks. We sail in sheltered tidal waters in Portsmouth, making it challenging enough for those who are more able, but still comfortable for cadets without any sailing experience!
Every Thursday from 7 until 9 we have band practice at the Copthorne Village Hall. From the beat of the percussion to the melodies of brass and mallets you can learn to play a variety of marching band instruments. We perform at various events across the year such as the Copthorne and Lewes bonfire as well as taking part in the NTC’s national band competition where we have one of the strongest performing bands.
Sailing at Ardingly
For eight weeks in the summer, our cadets will be moving down to Ardingly Activity Centre instead of Tuesday deck nights. We will be doing a variety of activities each week, including sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and raft building. These activities are always popular with the cadets and we always have a great time. Band competition At the end of July the ships band will be taking part in the NTC national band competition against the bands of every other ship. This year we will be participating in championship class which is the top category and will be battling it out for the title of the best band in the NTC.
The band recently has performed at many events such as N.T.C. Founder’s day, the Copthorne Carnival and Milton Mount School Fair. These events help recruit new cadets, raise money for the ship but also participating in several events encourages the younger band members to practice to improve their skills and use their new skill in a practical and enjoyable scenario. Not only do the band members participate at the Copthorne Carnival but there is also a stall where helpers and committee members of N.T.C help out and later on everyone helps out with the BBQ. This is a way for Swiftsure to raise money and awareness but as we are a friendly and sociable unit and we enjoy making and selling the food because we find interesting ways to stay entertained. Founder’s Day is an event, which usually takes place in Littlehampton, where all the ships get together to celebrate N.T.C’s founding day and commending everyone’s dedication to the corps and their continued effort towards N.T.C. All ships have their bands to play and then a ceremony takes place. This ceremony shows our respect to those who have left us and commemorates the cadets’, officers’ and instructors’ years of service to the corp.
