Probus Club of Horley and District
“When I retired and had done all the jobs I’d been putting off till then, I started to miss the buzz of work and my colleagues. My wife still had her friends who she met regularly and she suggested I think about joining Probus – a neighbour was already a member and had been asking if I was interested. Since then I’ve been a member for more than 4 years and am enjoying the company, the monthly lunch and the talks. I also meet other members around the town who I wouldn’t have known when I was working.”
Probus is an informal international network of individual clubs for retired people. There are about 2000 clubs across the UK and another 2000 dotted around the world. Each Club organises itself to meet the needs of its local members and to arrange activities and visits. As a result each one does things in its own way – some are men only, others are women only and there is an increasing number of mixed Clubs. There are lunch clubs, breakfast clubs and some special interest clubs, but the majority are men only lunch clubs. Probus grew out of the Rotary organisation and the name ‘Probus’ reflects the background of members who had been practising in the professions or running businesses before they retired.
More than 1 in 4 of the members of the Probus Club of Horley and District live in Copthorne and we meet for lunch at the Copthorne Hotel on the second Tuesday in every month to hear from a speaker. Each year the Club organises several events for members and their wives and arranges an annual holiday together with visits to places of interest chosen by members. The Club was established in 1986 and has 54 members drawn from Horley, Outwood, Smallfield as well as Copthorne with several travelling from further way. The Club website is www.probusclubhorley. org where there is a lot more information about membership and forthcoming activities. We welcome enquiries and new members. For more information about the Club and enquiries about joining, contact either the Club’s Secretary on 01293 784197 or the Club’s Copthorne contact on 01342 714411.
